Reason in favour of Gay Marriage #8:
Same Sex Marriage should be legalised because
WE DON’T WANT TO BE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY.
Argument in favour of Gay Marriage:
In due course of time, the restrictions on interracial marriage were overturned and its proponents were shown to be wrong. In other words, those who opposed interracial marriage were on the wrong side of history. Similarly, the campaign to overturn restrictions on same sex marriage is fast gaining momentum globally, and those who oppose it will be shown to be wrong. Hence, those who are against same sex marriage will eventually be on the wrong side of history.
The Facts:
Whilst some countries have legalised same sex marriage, other countries have made a conscious choice to ban it*. Therefore to assume that the tide of history will turn in favour of same sex marriage is to turn a blind eye towards the majority of nations who are pushing back on it. On a different note, to compare restrictions on interracial marriage to restrictions on homosexual marriage is to make a category error. Simply because restricting two people from marrying who have the ability to breed cannot be the same thing as restricting two people from marrying who do not have that ability.
The Real Issues:
By somehow painting the picture that the gay lobby is winning on a global scale, same sex marriage advocates want to paint the picture that homosexual marriage is inevitable. And if it is inevitable, why not jump on the bandwagon sooner? That seems to be their logic. But the facts tell a different story where countries are actually banning same sex marriage. In other words, the inevitability of global acceptance is a pressure tactic used by the gay lobby in order to coerce the Australian public and politicians into legalising same sex marriage. But this tactic is based on myths, not facts.
Conclusion:
The “wrong side of history” argument is based on a wrong idea of history. And a one-sided idea of the future. False ideas such as these should not be allowed to influence the present.
