Reason in favour of Gay Marriage #4:
Same Sex Marriage should be legalised because
GAYS ARE SIMPLY “BORN THIS WAY”
Argument in favour of Gay Marriage:
Being homosexual is not a lifestyle preference but a genetic predisposition. Hence people who are gay should have the right to enter into same sex marriage. So if an individual is genetically predisposed to a certain sexual preference, then they have a right to have their relationships recognised.
The Facts:
Science debunks the idea of a “gay gene” that would cause individuals to be born with homosexual tendencies. In other words, the notion that gays are “born this way” is a myth. Therefore, creating laws that change the definition of marriage based on so-called “scientific facts” would be a gross error. Especially when such laws would have far-reaching implications.
The Real Issues:
The campaign to legalise same sex marriage is a strategy to use the power of the state to normalise homosexual behaviour and silence those who would disapprove of such a lifestyle. Secondly, the idea of being genetically predisposed to a specific behaviour is a slippery slope. Consider this. What if someone says they’re genetically predisposed to any behaviour that society currently disapproves of? For example, what if they are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or adultery? What about pedophilia or bestiality? What about kleptomania? After all, if an individual can be genetically predisposed to one sort of sexual preference, why not another sort of preference? In fact, why limit the “born this way” argument to sexuality; what’s to stop anyone from using this excuse to justify any sort of lifestyle and behaviour?
Conclusion:
The idea that gays are “born this way” is a myth. Therefore to pass laws that perpetuate this myth is to bind all of society to something that just isn’t true. That’s not something good governments do.
