Reason in favour of Gay Marriage:
Same Sex Marriage should be legalised because
THE ONLY ARGUMENTS AGAINST IT ARE RELIGIOUS.
Argument in favour of Gay Marriage:
Whilst people are entitled to their religious beliefs (no matter how strong and deep-seated they may be), such beliefs should not be imposed on society as a whole. After all, religious beliefs are highly personal and private in nature and therefore should not be used to inform matters of policy for the public at large. So if someone’s religious beliefs do not allow for same sex marriage, good for them. But they should keep their beliefs to themselves and not try to bind everyone else to their beliefs.
The Facts:
Yes, those who are opposed to same sex marriage are often opposed to the idea because of their religious convictions. But that does not imply that the only arguments against same sex marriage are religious arguments. That is demonstrably false as shown here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. None of these arguments against same sex marriage are religious arguments, even though the author does have religious convictions of his own.
This argument borders on arrogance because it presumes that religious people are unable to construct non-religious arguments and think outside the box of religion.
The Real Issues:
All the arguments in favour of same sex marriage are based on shallow sentimentalism. Based completely on rhetoric, they seem designed to appeal to emotion rather than to the intellect. If you think that’s an unfair criticism, have a look at the arguments in favour of same sex marriage given above. Such shallow reasoning is only to be expected because that’s the only way to shift the focus away from the real dangers that accompany same sex marriage:
(a) compromised wellbeing of children by denying them the right to both a Mum and a Dad,
(b) compromise to individual freedom of expression by shutting down opposing voices, and
(c) compromise to the very meaning of marriage by opening the door to polygamy and incest.
Conclusion:
At the heart of it, the campaign for same sex marriage is a campaign that seeks to elevate so called individual rights above the rights of children in particular, and society in general. Whilst the gay lobby tries very hard to shut down religious arguments on grounds that they are extremely personal, the arguments given in favour of same sex marriage, ironically, are that they are intensely personal.
